Lakshmi Mantra for a Prosperous 2010

Posted by on Jan 20, 2010

The Goddess Lakshmi is one of the many incarnations of the Divine Feminine in the Hindu culture.  She represents power, prosperity, beauty, luxury and peace. She also represents fertitilty and the inspiring of creative ideas which can lead to greater wealth. Even if she is more of a metaphor for your prosperous state of mind, the Sanskrit chants which honor her are said to put your mind in the same place as an individual who is one with wealth, health and prosperity.  The Goddess Lakshmi is celebrated during the festival of lights in India, called Diwali. She is also known as one of the many incarnations of Padmapriya (one who resides within the lotus) which means one who rests in a state of higher awareness or bliss.

There are several mantras which honor her and I offer the following few to invite greater abundance into your life in 2010.

“Sarvagyay Sarvavarday Sarvadushtbhaydkree
Sarvadukhaharay Devi MahaLakshmi Namostutay”

Translated roughly from Sanskrit means: O Maa Lakshmi, you are all knowing, you grant an uplifted mind to all, you are a terror to the ego, removing fear from fear itself, and your essence removes the misery of all. O propitious goddess, I surrender to you.

“Siddhi Buddhipraday Devi Bhuktimuktipradayeenee
Mantramurtay Sada Devi Mahalakshmi Namostutay”
Translated roughly from Sanskrit means: O Mother, Thou knows all, Thou gives gifts of wisdom to all, Thou art a terror to the wicked [ego], and Thou art the remover of the misery [ego-mind] of all. O Mother auspicious, I bow [in surrender] to Thee.

The key word here is surrender.  Merriam Webster defined surrender as follows: 1 a : to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand b : to give up completely or agree to forgo especially in favor of another

2 a : to give (oneself) up into the power of another especially as a prisoner b : to give (oneself) over to something (as an influence) to give oneself up into the power of another : yield, synonyms: see relinquish

We must surrender our small mindedness to the Goddess – she acts as a catalyst to get out of our own way.  She is the metaphor and manifestation of ahigher state of mind which we can atatin but are held back from via our own thoughts of limitation and resistance.

I can see this resistance to letting go of limiting thoughts happening with many of my friends and family members lately.  They seem to be right on the brink of discovering their dreams or realizing a long held desire and literaly moments before that desire is about to be fulfilled, the old conditioning of the ego – or that small hurt child which many of us still operate from, rises up in a fury and makes all things seem impossible.  The ego uses whatever fears we innately hold within us to exacerbate hurdles.  We make mountains out of molehills.  We can’t see the forest for the trees.  We just KNOW that this beautiful life we’ve imagined is too good for us.

But this is not so.  This is only our cuurent state of mind, and it can be elevated. We must relinquish control.  We can let the ego dissolve without fear added upon fear and become an open receptacle for greater good, peace and prosperity.  Maha Lakshmi helps us to dissolve the relentless ego so that we may realize the abundance that is already before us.
